If it wasn't for imagination and creativity the following items would not be in existence today: automobile, airplane, electricity, and the telephone (i.e., we now have "smart phones and smart houses").
Imagination and creativity help improve our daily lives by updating technology to perform tasks efficiently.
Some surgeries that once were complicated are now easier to perform due to the updated technology and new or improved techniques used. We owe it all to continuous imagination and creativity produced by human beings.
Because of imagination and creativity older adults are able to live in assistant living communities, instead of their families placing them into nursing homes. Cameras and many portable devices make it easier to provide security, emergency help, and companionship when needed.
With a background in therapy, new ideas, such as, "therapy online, " have allowed many therapists to provide services to people in rural areas, that may not have had access to therapeutic services in their home town.
What about people who are considered non-ambulatory? Most non-ambulatory people are confined to wheelchairs. Because of imagination and creativity wheelchairs have become easier to maneuver. In addition, many non-ambulatory people are able to drive vehicles designed especially for their wheelchair.
Imagination and creativity provides limitless opportunities to be created within our universe and on other planets (i.e., satellites). It gives us the ability to stimulate our minds to find or create opportunities even in bad experiences or circumstances.
By asking yourself "what if?" questions and "how can such a thing be created?" will bring forth many ideas. However, one must be a believer of possibilities. A person with great optimism may have a better chance of using her visualization skills to produce a better product or create a new product. Optimistic people are more enthusiastic about life and are more motivated and open to imagination and creativity.
According to Dr. Padma Shankar, "Everyone can be creative. The first task in becoming more creative is to give yourself permission to do things creatively."
A person with a positive attitude increases her ability to use her senses (see/touch/smell/hear/taste) to tap into her imagination and creativity. Sometimes just by seeing an object or not having a tangible item within one's environment can spark an idea. The same goes for the other fours senses, just by hearing or tasting something can spark one's imagination to create or improve an original item.
Self-esteem and self-confidence are some of the most important components in imagination and creativity. You must be bold and willing to "think outside the box" and not give attention to what people say about your ideas.
Tips to stimulating your imagination and creativity:
- reading about unfamiliar topics/subjects
- use mind mapping strategies in your thought process
- play and exercise
- positive thinking
According to scientists, we human beings only use 10% of our brains'. We may create new neural-pathways within our brains by visiting places we have never gone before, reading about unfamiliar topics, or doing things we have never done before. Creating new synapses may stimulate your mind to visualize new ideas.
In junior high school I once had a substitute teacher who introduced the class to alternate realities. He really challenged the class to "think outside of the box."
